At Emanuelson-Podas, we believe that the best results are achieved when architects and engineers truly and fully connect. And we know that communication is absolutely central to that connection. We understand that it takes effort. We understand that it takes intentionality. We understand that it takes time. But the best solutions and the best systems are only possible when we keep innovation and creativity at the forefront, and when we work closely with our clients as a tight, cohesive team.

Mike Webert

Mechanical Engineer, PE, Managing Partner

“The founders of Emanuelson-Podas taught me that a successful company can be based on family values, and we’ve carried that legacy on with the company today.”

Mike has spent more than 20 years with Emanuelson-Podas in the role of managing partner and is a registered mechanical engineer in 49 states. His hands-on, direct design on a wide variety of projects, along with extensive time in the field working with contractors, has honed his ability to quickly troubleshoot complex HVAC and plumbing designs. Mike still finds his greatest passion within the design process, working to integrate MEP design into a seamless building entity.

Having the contractors in mind during the design process was drilled into Mike early in his career. The ability to design systems and convey those designs in quality construction documents for contractors is as important today as it was 26 years ago when Mike started at EP. The constructability of the MEP design is stressed to the team on a daily basis.

About Mike:

From a young age, Mike found himself attracted to knowing how things work and to working with his hands. An early photo shows him in his grandfather’s woodshop making a guitar out of scrap wood and kite string. Although Mike no longer has this work of art, he claims the playability of that instrument would rival some of the finest modern guitars! His interest in guitars continues as he finds himself picking up a guitar for a few minutes each day as a way to unwind. Today his workshop includes two industrial sewing machines, used to make camping and hunting gear and to customize his son’s hockey goalie equipment.

During the weekends you’ll typically find Mike and his wife Kiersten working on their house or watching their two sons and daughter play sports. An avid hunter while growing up, Mike has again found the hunting passion and enjoys walking the fields for game birds alongside “BB,” his Small Munsterlander Pointer.

Matt Fults

Electrical Engineer, PE, LC, Lighting Designer, Managing Partner

“One of the things that sets us apart from other groups is our deep appreciation for the aesthetics of a project. We feel that understanding and enhancing the artistry of a project falls to us as well as to the architect.”

Matt is a managing partner and has more than 18 years of experience spanning several industries and a multitude of project types. Matt is a licensed professional engineer in 49 states and holds the Lighting Certified (LC) designation from the NCQLP. Lighting design is an area of special interest for Matt, as he enjoys the interaction between lighting and architecture.

Matt works closely with each member of the project team. His experience as an apprentice electrician and carpenter while in college has given him practical insight into construction methods and problem solving. He truly enjoys being on a construction site and seeing a vision turned into reality.

About Matt:

Away from the office, Matt is a woodworker and home improvement junkie. His 130-plus-year-old house has provided numerous opportunities to hone his skills in those areas. Having the appropriate tools for almost any remodeling challenge is a continuous goal. The family minivan has never seen the inside of the garage due to this obsession, but Matt has a three-year plan to correct this oversight.

Matt married Sara, his high school sweetheart, over 18 years ago. With their two children in elementary school, weeknights are spent on homework and activities. Weekends often involve the whole family helping on the latest remodeling project, followed by a trip to Dairy Queen. Cooper, a joyful golden retriever, rounds out the family and is a big fan of DQ’s pup cups.

John is a managing partner with nearly 15 years’ experience. He leads the mechanical engineering efforts for a number of industry sectors, including fitness, housing and hospitality. As a licensed professional engineer, he is directly involved in all aspects of mechanical design and considers his true expertise plumbing design. John worked for his family’s plumbing company through college in the summers and grew his design expertise on the job at medical office buildings, hospitals, clean rooms and other plumbing-heavy projects. Troy Nystrom

Troy Nystrom

Electrical Engineer, PE, Managing Partner

“We place an emphasis on the importance of being fully present throughout the course of a project. We should be providing input, expertise and value at every step. That’s what good partners do.”

Troy is a registered electrical engineer with more than 15 years of experience. He leads the electrical department at EP as well as the engineering efforts for the fitness team. Troy takes great pride in getting into the software and taking a hands-on approach to his design. He loves the creativity involved with lighting design and how it counterbalances the other more rigid aspects of electrical design, such as power distribution.

Troy excels at leading complex projects that require complicated systems and exceptionally close coordination between disciplines. Early in the process he works to fully understand the needs and wants of all parties involved in a project – especially the owner and the architect – and is driven to design systems that meet or exceed those requirements.

About Troy:

Troy learned the value of both hard work and managing a home-life balance at a young age by watching how his dad approached his job as a long-haul trucker. Most weekends were spent side-by-side with him: washing the truck, changing the oil, greasing zerks and polishing chrome wheel rims. (If you’ve never polished truck rims, consider yourself lucky.) On the road most nights, his dad scheduled his routes to make sure he was home when Troy had a basketball or baseball game.

Outside the office, Troy enjoys a home life that is getting busier by the day. He and his wife, Cheri, are parents to twin boys and a younger daughter. Nights are quickly filling up with basketball, baseball, football, soccer, dance, gymnastics, swimming … well you get the idea. On free nights, Troy enjoys immersing himself in a good video game, hitting a live music concert with friends or sinking into the couch with a good movie. As the kids get older, he and Cheri are hoping to renew their passion for travel and pass that love onto their children.
